Skudo has been selected for SIGMA, a European Defence Fund project under the EDF 2024 work programme. SIGMA addresses the detection, localisation and characterisation of sources that interfere with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), which provide positioning information used across modern defence and critical systems.
Resilient positioning matters because knowing where a platform is can be essential to its operation. Vehicles, uncrewed systems and other equipment depend on positioning information to support navigation and coordination. When interference affects that information, operators need to understand the disturbance and its effect on the systems they rely on.
SIGMA focuses on the sources of such interference. Detection establishes that a disturbance is present; localisation helps determine where it originates; and characterisation helps explain its nature. Together, these areas contribute to a clearer understanding of the environment in which positioning systems must operate. That understanding is an important part of building resilience around navigation-dependent capabilities.
For Skudo, the selection extends the company’s participation in European defence-security development. Its work centres on FPGA-based hardware security, secure embedded systems and protected communications for demanding platforms. Participation in SIGMA places that engineering background within a broader collaborative effort addressing the reliability of systems used in defence.
The project follows Skudo’s selection for HSM4COM under EDF 2023. The two projects address complementary concerns: secure hardware and the resilience of positioning systems. Both sit within Skudo’s wider focus on helping defence and space platforms operate with dependable information and communications.
SIGMA represents another step in Skudo’s European programme track record. Alongside its work with the European Space Agency, the EDF selection supports the company’s continuing involvement in collaborative engineering for demanding operational environments and strengthens its connections across the European defence-security community.
